Fun way to practice sorting

Working on sorting with your kiddos?  Here’s a quick and fun way to practice – have the kids sit in a circle and each remove one shoe.  The kids can practice sorting by one attribute (i.e. color, size, athletic/dress shoe, etc.) or two attributes (i.e. color + size, color + type, etc.).  Let them decide what categories to sort by, and point out that you can sort the same group of shoes in different ways.  Prompt them to sort by more than one attribute, too.  You can also sort the shoes yourself and have the kids guess your “rule” (the criteria you used to sort), or have one child sort and the others guess their rule.

The kids think it’s hilarious that they get to take one shoe off, and it makes for a memorable lesson.  Happy sorting!
