The week before winter break can feel like a whirlwind of excitement and distraction. It’s a common challenge for teachers to keep students engaged, especially during literacy centers when routines often slip.
Excitement is high, schedules are off, and keeping students on task can feel like an uphill battle.
That’s where simple, no-fuss activities come in handy. Low-prep literacy centers are a great way to keep students’ focus while they get some meaningful reading and writing practice.

In this blog post, you’ll find three winter-themed literacy centers for kindergarten and first/second grade that are fun to play and will keep the learning going all the way to break.
These centers come directly from the free trial of the Kindergarten and First/Second Grade Literacy Clubs. They are quick to set up, easy to differentiate, and packed with seasonal fun.
1. Phonics Fun in a Winter Wonderland
Kindergarten Option: Catch the Snowflake Phonics Game
Students roll a die, identify a sound or pattern (like a vowel or digraph), and cover a matching word on the board. The first player to cover all four circles around a snowflake wins. With versions targeting CVC words and digraphs, it’s easy to match this game to your students’ needs.

1st/2nd Grade Option: Winter Themed Flip, Find, and Cover
Students pick a word card, read it aloud, then find the matching snowman on the game board. They place a hat on the snowman and write the word on their recording sheet. The game continues until all snowmen are covered, making for great repeated practice.
This customizable activity is great for practicing high-frequency words or words that match specific phonics patterns.

2. Practice Writing Letters and Words with a Seasonal Twist
Kindergarten Option: Find and Write Activities
Students choose from three winter scenes (Snowy Street, Frozen Pond, or Arctic) and write sentences about what they see. This activity is perfect for a writing center, with options for sentence frames for support or open-ended prompts for advanced writers.

1st/2nd Grade Option: Snowboard Race High-Frequency Word Game
In this 2-3 player game, students read and write high-frequency words as they ‘race’ to the end of a snowy game board. The word list is easily customizable in Google Slides so that you can tailor it to your students. The lighthearted competition keeps students motivated and builds fluency and sight word mastery through repeated practice.

3. Building Foundational Skills with Winter Games
Kindergarten Option: Fishing for Letter Names and Sounds
Students roll a die, find the matching line of letters, and “go fishing” by reading each letter’s name or sound. This can be played solo or in pairs. It’s a hands-on way to encourage repetition without feeling repetitive.

1st/2nd Grade Option: Building Snowmen Adverb Grammar Game
In this 2-player game, students draw a card, identify if it’s an adverb, and move forward on the snowman-themed board if correct. They record the adverbs they find along the way. This game makes grammar interactive and fun, helping to solidify their understanding of adverbs.

Why Engagement Matters Before a Break
The days leading up to a long break set the tone for how students return. Engaging lessons help students keep their momentum, strengthen skills, and avoid that dreaded ‘break slump’.
These low-prep centers are a great way to channel pre-break excitement into something productive. Instead of counting down the minutes, students are actively reading, writing, and collaborating right up to the last day.
Quick Tips for Making Centers Run Smoothly Before a Break
- Review directions with the whole class at the start of the day.
- Keep materials organized in labeled bins or trays.
- Assign partners or groups ahead of time to save transition time.
- Use a timer to keep rotations moving.
- Offer student choice to keep motivation high.
